Otto Cohnheim--the forgotten physiologist.

چکیده

Who was Otto Cohnheim? It is no exaggeration to say that he was the man who laid the foundation of our present understanding of the absorption of protein digestion products and also protein metabolism-yet he remains forgotten. This is largely because he unfortunately became, like so many others, a victim of political enthusiasm. 1978 is the 25th anniversary of his death, a fitting time to try to restore some of his scientific credit, which should be great, and to honour his memory. Otto Cohnheim must not be confused with his father, the eminent pathologist Julius Cohnheim, whose solemn Victorian portrait may still be seen in at least one standard textbook of pathology. Many of us may recall from our physiology books that "Cohnheim discovered erepsin"-but the discoverer of erepsin was Otto Cohnheim, not Julius.

Protein Digestion and Absorption

About three-quarters of a century ago, Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." This somber dictum is splendidly illustrated by the history of the study of protein digestion and absorption over the same three-quarters of a century (12,13). This chapter begins with a summary of this history, since it provides a deeper understanding of the principles invol...

Should physiology training be divorced from the medical curriculum. Introduction.

Many Departments of Physiology are administratively and fiscally in medical schools. Consequently, graduate students in these departments interact with medical faculty and medical students. They frequently take courses with medical students. From time to time the question has been asked whether this arrangement is in the best interest of the physiology graduate student and, since the discipline...

Autopharmacology- a Review

INTRODUCTION Historically, the first approach to the concept of autopharmacology began with British physiologist and pharmacologist Henry Dale in the 1910s, discovered the role of acetylcholine in synaptic transmission, and later proved by Austrian physiologist Otto Loewi, to be the neurotransmitter involved in the proximal synapses of the autonomic nervous system (initially named Vagusstoff by...

THE EFFECT OF TYPE OF SPECIFIC HEATS RATIO OF WORKING FLUID ON THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF STANDARD OTTO CYCLE

In thermodynamic analysis of internal combustion engine, the specific heats of working fluid is considered to be constant. Due to specific heats are functions of operation temperature of cycle, this consideration cause to several errors in the thermal analysis. In this paper, standard Otto cycle with three various types of specific heats ratios has been analyzed numerically and effect of these ...

Autonomic modulation preceding the onset of atrial fibrillation.

Autonomic influences on the heart have been recognized for many centuries. It was not until 1921, however, that a German physiologist named Otto Loewi stimulated a frog’s vagus nerve, collected the released substance, and applied it to a second, different frog heart to demonstrate its effects. For his discovery of this “vagusstuff” (subsequently shown to be acetylcholine), Loewi (1) shared the ...
